Allon Fasaha
An accelerated learning platform for children the school system never reached, built to work with the realities of Northern Nigeria rather than against them.
The challenge
Nigeria has one of the largest populations of out-of-school children in the world, and the problem is concentrated in the north, where I grew up. For these children, the barrier is not ability. It is that conventional schooling assumes conditions their lives do not provide: a nearby school, a predictable timetable, reliable connectivity and materials in the right language.
Any serious answer had to accept those constraints as the starting point, not treat them as edge cases.
The approach
At Steamledge we designed Allon Fasaha, whose name draws on the Hausa word "allo" for the wooden learning slate familiar across Northern Nigeria, as an accelerated learning platform that meets children where they are. The solution we entered into Microsoft's #BuildFor2030 Hackathon, called Classroom without Borders, was described by Microsoft as a mobile offline and online learning device that seeks to re-engage children living in remote rural areas of Northern Nigeria who are out of school.
The design principles were plain. Work offline first, because connectivity is the exception rather than the rule. Compress learning, because older children need to catch up quickly for the catch-up to matter. Respect the culture and language children already have, because learning tools that ignore them do not get used.
What was built
A learning platform combining offline and online delivery, structured accelerated learning content, and a distribution model that could operate in remote rural communities. The product formed part of a wider Steamledge portfolio serving schools, teachers and skills programmes, which meant it could draw on an existing content and delivery operation rather than starting cold.
Evidence of impact
Independently verifiable. In January 2022 Microsoft named Allon Fasaha a winner of its #BuildFor2030 Hackathon in the Empowering Communities category, announced on Microsoft's official blog.
Company-reported. Allon Fasaha has reached more than 100,000 learners. Steamledge's wider programmes had trained more than 80,000 students and about 1,500 teachers by 2023, as reported in Nigerian press coverage.
What I learned
Constraints are the design brief. The features that made Allon Fasaha useful, offline-first delivery and accelerated pacing, came directly from accepting hard constraints early instead of building the comfortable product first and adapting it later.
I also learned that recognition follows relevance. We did not build for a hackathon. We entered a hackathon with something already real, and that difference showed.
